The gluten-free diet has never been as popular as it is now.
In fact, a survey in 2015 found that just under 25% of American's consume a gluten-free processed food. This is a massive increase of 17% over just 2 years.
However, some medical doctors are concerned about children who haven't got Celiac Disease consuming gluten-free foods.
With Celiac Disease present in just 1% of the United States population, experts believe that misconceptions about gluten in the mainstream media are leading people to adopt the lifestyle; even if they don't really need it.
Is the Gluten-Free Diet Healthy
In theory yes!
By eliminating gluten from your diet, you cut out most of the processed foods that make up the "American-Diet" and force yourself to consume more natural whole foods.
As an added bonus, when you begin to eat more fruits and vegetables, you increase consumption of essential micro-nutrients!
Unfortunately, a theory is just that. A Theory.
In today's America, the Gluten-Free diet is no healthier than a standard diet. In fact, it may be worse.
With a huge increase in gluten-free processed products such as bread, cookies, cupcakes, pizzas and crackers; researchers are finding that many who adopt the gluten-free diet don't change their diet at all!
If they used to eat pizza, they now eat gluten-free pizza.
If they used to eat sandwiches, they now eat gluten-free sandwiches.
If they used to only eat carbohydrates, they will still only eat carbohydrates.
In fact, according to Dr. Reilly, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Columbia University Medical Center, gluten-free foods are often higher in sugars and fats and have been linked to obesity!
In addition, these processed gluten-free foods are not fortified with any vitamins or minerals and may lead to nutritional deficiencies.
So the Experts were Right?
Well, no not really.
Most gluten-free processed foods you see in your supermarket aren't gluten-free anyway. They meet a certain threshold of gluten as required by the FDA so that they can write "gluten-free" on the package.
If children were eating a truly gluten-free diet, then they probably would become more healthy.
Why? Well, because a truly gluten-free diet is high in fresh fruits and vegetables and a variety of proteins including fish, pork, lamb, and chicken.
